On January 3, 2025, authorities received a report of leatherback turtle tracks leading to a nest at Thung Dab Beach, Koh Phra Thong Subdistrict, Kuraburi District, Phang Nga Province. Upon inspection, 127 turtle eggs were found, categorized as 82 viable eggs, 44 unfertilized eggs, and 1 broken egg. Due to the nest's location in a flood-prone area with limited accessibility, the decision was made to relocate the eggs to Khuk Khak Beach, Takua Pa District.
A temporary protective enclosure was set up to ensure the eggs' safety. The incubation period is expected to take approximately 55-60 days before the hatchlings are ready to return to the sea. Authorities will also provide educational outreach to visitors to raise awareness about leatherback turtle conservation efforts.
Note: In Phang Nga Province, including Khaolak, driving cars or riding motorbikes on the beach is prohibited to protect turtle nesting areas. Phang Nga is one of the top three provinces in Thailand where turtles frequently come to nest.
